Growth
This is how a shell grows
I say,
holding the pink scallop
and running a finger
over its ribbed top.
Every wrinkle
a year’s growth,
spreading and fattening,
traces of its former self
found in dark scars,
blotches and cracks
at crenulated ends.
Look how the swelling tide
has eroded its shape.
This is how I’ve grown,
I think.
